But what the CAT requires most, even more than basic proficiency in the areas talked about, is supreme motivation. This again comes through regular practice and able guidance. It is not so much about solving questions as it is about selecting the right ones. This makes the selection of questions vitally important. Generally the cut-offs hover around one-third of the maximum score.
Questions based on data presented in the form of pie-charts, tables and graphs, which involved tedious calculations, have given way to problems based on reasoning. The data interpretation section can be aced with regular practice. Reading, it has been my experience, besides enhancing ones linguistic skills, also adds to ones analytical skills and overall intelligence. Reading a few good books can be of immense help. One who has not been in some good reading practice is likely to find himself in problem. The English section has, for the past couple of years, more a test of reading comprehension than, let's say, of formal grammar and vocabulary. The brand of mathematics which features in the CAT is radically different from what is taught in usual academics, and calls more for analytical thinking than for traditional methods and formulae. Over the years, it has been my experience that a hard-core mathematics background can at times work to your disadvantage. Anyone who has studied mathematics till class X can easily sail through. Much against the popularly held view, the mathematics does not require a hard-core mathematics background, though elementary skills thereof are a must. The number of questions has been, with a few exceptions, on the decline, decreasing from somewhere around 200 to 75 in 2007. Remember, the lack of predictability has reputedly been one of the very infamous attributes of the CAT. In fact, since its very inception the CAT has maintained this structure without any change, something which makes it predictable to a very significant extent. Traditionally the CAT has had three sections - mathematics, English and data interpretation, intended to test respective skills. CAT, as seems to be the popular dictum, is not meant for plebeians and is the domain of an elite few.
